What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive and non surgical technique that involves the application of strong energy pulses to the skin. Acoustic pressure waves are generated by the Shockwave machine. These energy waves radiate from the point of application on the skin.

Conditions That can be Treated by Shockwave Therapy

While this is not an exhaustive list, research has been completed on the following musculoskeletal conditions linking shockwave therapy with positive outcomes:
Achilles Tendinopathy - This is an injury to the achilles tendon which connects the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles (calf muscles) to the heel.

Buritis - This is a condition where bursa become inflamed leading to pain and dysfunction. Bursa are fluid filled sacs that assist with movement of our bodies. They do this through facilitating gliding of tendons and reducing friction.

Shin splints - This condition is known as medial tibial stress syndrome. It is characterized by pain in the anterior aspect of the leg below the knee (shin).
Plantar fasciitis - A painful condition experienced in the heel of the foot.
Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) - Pain and decreased function experienced at the elbow that result in reduced grip strength.
Patellar tendinosis (jumper's knee) - Experienced as pain in the patellar tendon which is located just inferior to the patella (knee cap)
Calcific tendonitis of the rotator cuff (found in the shoulder) - This is a condition that is characterized by build up of calcium deposits in the rotator cuff tendons. These tendons are found in the shoulder complex.
